Recent OTI purchase Gatewood will have an important test in Friday’s Group 3 2012 Glorious Stakes with a win going a long way towards qualifying him for the 2012 Melbourne Cup.
The promising four-year-old has won four of six starts but tomorrow’s 2400-metre event will be his first step up to group-level racing.
OTI purchased a 50-percent share in the son of Galileo last month with the aim of targeting him towards the Melbourne Cup.
While OTI will also have the already qualified Quest For Peace in the Glorious Stakes, OTI’s Terry Henderson admitted it was more important for their new addition to score victory.
“It’s more important that he [Gatewood] wins because obviously he’ll go up significantly in the ratings and would probably get close to guaranteeing himself a start in the race [Melbourne Cup],” Henderson said.
Henderson said the next step for Gatewood following his group-level debut would largely depend on how he performed on Friday.
“If he was to win the race, he could go on to the Prix de Kergorlay in France, there’s also a nice race at Newbury or he could even stay at a mile-and-a-half (2400m) and go to the Prix de Deauville,” he said.
“That’s if he was to win. If he was to run a nice race, but still find himself needing to get his rating up, then we’d then look at something a little lesser.”
Also a son of Galileo, Quest For Peace is a more accomplished horse, having won three of eight starts including once at Listed and once at Group 3 level.
The highlight win came in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes (2400m) at Ascot last October but he has been below his best this year, finishing a long way off the pace in his two most recent starts.
The four-year-old struggled when fourth in the Coronation Cup on June 2 before finishing 36 lengths behind the winner in the Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot on June 23.
