Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
Ross Stitt’s dual stakes winning seven-year-old Youthful Jack has opened the early favourite to win the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup 2012 this Thursday, the Taree-based galloper out to break a five month winning drought.
Due to jump at 4:09pm as Coffs Harbour Race 7, the $80,000 Carlton Mid 2012 Coffs Harbour Gold Cup (1600m) boasts a capacity field this year with Youthful Jack to jump from the inside alley.
Having won 16 of their 51 career starts to date, Youthful Legs gelding Youthful Jack hasn’t won a race since a mile feature at Launceston in Tasmanaia back in February.
They were most recently seen finishing four lengths away eighth to Epsom Handicap-bound Bold Glance over 1350m at Doomben last Saturday, an effort the bookies think they will improve on when stepping up to the 1600m.
Despite having been allocated the hefty 62kg topweight, which is a massive six kilos more than what they carried at Doomben last weekend, they pay $4.60 through bookmaker.com.au to score the Coffs Harbour Cup win and boost their career earnings past the $1 million mark.
Second elect in the Coffs Harbour Cup betting markets is then $5.50 shot Pepperwood.
Liam Birchley’s Brisbane raider is out to improve on their last start sixth to Hour Of Peril in the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm on July 16.
Thursday will be the Easy Rocking eight-year-olds’ interstate debut, Pepperwood due to jump from barrier six with Danny Nikolic in the saddle.
Just two other Coffs Harbour Cup hopefuls are at single-figures in the latest markets with local mare Erinsea ($8.50) out to become the first Coffs Harbour-trained horse to win the feature since 1991, and Leon Davies’ smart Tamworth galloper Clever Hans ($9).
Viscount gelding Clever Hans has been in top form this time in running a brave second to Carry Me Bluey in the South Grafton Cup (1600m) two back before their credible last start fourth to Hour OF Peril in the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm on July 21.
Other longer-priced hopefuls in the Coffs Harbour Cup odds that have genuine claims for an upset include the Stephen Farley-trained Wishwyn ($10), Marc Conners’ last-start Muswellbrook winner Magnolia Lane ($13) and their stablemate Letchworth ($13) who has gained a start as the first emergency after the early scratching of #7 One Lickety Split.
