Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Stephen Brown’s Metric Mile winner Sheahan has attracted a 1.5kg penalty for the Darwin Cup 2012, Fannie Bay’s headline event running this coming Monday August 6.
Taking their race record to five wins from 12 starts, Zabeel four-year-old Sheahan held off stablemate Bolton by a half-length to win the traditional Darwin Cup lead-up on Saturday, the $47,000 Sky Racing Metric Mile (1600m).
It was their second straight win at the Fannie Bay track having carried a hefty 59kg to an impressive four and a half-length victory in the Toyota Cup a fortnight earlier.
One of the 16 early nominees for the $185,000 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup (2000m), Sheahan was originally allocated the 54kg minimum weight.
Handicappers have subsequently penalised them for their effort in the Metric Mile, a race that produced last year’s Darwin Cup winner, and they have risen to 55.5kg.
Darwin Cup weights are led by defending champion Hawks Bay, winner of last year’s Metric Mile also, Neil Dyer’s Black Hawk six-year-old heavily handicapped with 64.5kg – 2.5kg more than they had on their back for their four length win in the classic 12 months ago.
Hawks Bay also ran in the 2010 Darwin Cup finishing a devastatingly close second by Shout Out Loud.
The veteran of 51 starts failed to handle the 65kg topweight in the Metric Mile this year, Hawks Bay finishing just over six lengths off the winner.
Metric Mile runner-up Bolton and third placed Club Liquid are also both nominated for the Darwin Cup 2012.
The fellow Stephen Brown-trained Bolton, who also ran second to Hawks Bay in the Chief Minister’s Cup two back, will drop from 57.5kg to 57kg if they back up while Dick Leech’s rising nine-year-old Club Liquid, a $31 roughie in the Metric Mile, has 54kg for Monday the same as what they had for the Metric Mile.
There is a chance Bolton will be absent from the Darwin Cup 2012 field after they pulled up sore from the Metric Mile.
They will undergo scans to their near-side front leg to determine the extent of the damage, but Brown remains confident they will be fine and that there was no injury to the ligaments.
“It is not a big deal, he shaved a bit of the hair off his leg and the skin is bruised,” Brown said.
