After indicating her Golden Slipper winner Pierro may not be ready to tackle the Golden Rose 2012 in Sydney and could be saved for a Cox Plate campaign down in Melbourne this spring, Gai Waterhouse is confident Kabayan will represent her well in the season’s opening Group 1.
Lightly-raced Haradasun gelding Kabayan was last seen running a slashing second to ace Brisbane juvenile Sizzling in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm when beaten only a nose on June 9.
That was their third career start, Kabayan having won their Wyong debut in May by two lengths before a second-up second at Rosehill over 1200m.
They are now gearing up for a new season return where they will target the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) which kicks off elite level racing at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday September 15.
In the future Golden Rose odds at bookmakers around the country Pierro, winner of the autumn 2YO Triple Crown, is the dominant favourite.
Waterhouse however suggests it is the lesser known stablemate Kabayan, paying around $13 in the early Golden Rose betting markets, that is more prepared for the feature.
“Kabayan is absolutely more forward than Pierro,” Waterhouse said on Sunday.
“He is in full work, he has been in work about 10 days.
“He did what horses just don’t do in his first preparation, going from a maiden at Wyong to being narrowly beaten in a Group 1.”
