Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Black Caviar will be absent from the Spring Racing Carnival later this year after trainer Peter Moody announced that the super mare will be rested.
Fuelling speculation that the unbeaten star of the track has run her last race, Moody decided not to prepare her for what would have been the fourth spring carnival of her career.
The trainer has revealed that a final decision concerning Black Caviar’s racing future would be made in September, following the Australian Horse Of The Year awards.
“All the owners will be in town then and we can sit down and have a good discussion about what to do with her,” Moody said.
“We have two options. If we retire her after that meeting she’s still got plenty of time to go to stud.
“Otherwise we will give her a decent spell and bring her back for the autumn.”
The decision to miss the Spring Carnival will also mean that the six-year-old mare will not travel to Sha Tin Racecourse to contest the Group 1 Hong Kong International Sprint on December 9.
Black Caviar would secure her connections a lucrative $1 million bonus if she were able to win that race, which is another leg of the Global Sprint Challenge.
Talk of retirement was rife after Black Caviar suffered a number of muscle injuries whilst posting a narrow win in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.
The Australian champion of the turf has won all 22 of her career race starts and has earned more than $6 million in prize money.
“She’s just needed time to get over her trip to England,” her trainer said.
“She’s had a really busy time in the past year or so and just needs a break to get over it.
“She’s fine in herself and she’s recovered from her injuries, but it would be asking a lot of her to have only a couple of weeks off and then be ready for the spring.”
Despite Black Caviar’s absence from the 2012 Spring Racing Carnival, there will still be a variety of top gallopers contesting the major spring features.
