They may have faced just nine rivals after the plethora of scratchings from Saturday’s Caulfield feature, but the win by the Peter Moody-trained Ready To Rip in the Bletchingly Stakes 2012 was still an impressive one.
Maintaining their flawless race record for their new trainer, the More Than Ready four-year-old previously prepared in Queensland by Andrew Williamson, Ready To Rip posted their second win on the trot in the $125,000 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) handing Moody back-to-back victories in the feature following the success of Mid Summer Music 12 months earlier.
It came on the back of a first-up victory at Flemington in the Listed All Victorian Sprint Final (1200m) and boosted their career record to seven wins from 19 starts for $386,100 in career prize money.
“I thought his work was a bit plain before he won at Flemington but his work on Tuesday showed he had really lifted,” Moody said of the improvement seen from Ready To Rip.
“In Queensland, he was a bit of a first-up specialist, so it’s a good effort to win at weight-for-age second-up.”
Going out as a $5 chance in the markets, five scratchings leaving a 10 horse Bletchingly Stakes field, Ready To Rip was ridden by Black Caviar’s regular jockey Luke Nolen who guided them to a half-length win over the David Bourne-trained Zamorar ($3.20F).
It was the same Bletchingly Stakes Quinella the team at Races.com.au tipped while the third placegetter Dusty Star ($5.50), who finished just a nose further off Zamorar, was our roughie tip to place.
Moody underestimated the talent of last year’s Bletchingly Stakes winner Mid Summer Music who went on to surprise him with a win in the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane this winter, and he hopes Ready To Rip will be also be able to progress onto elite level later on.
“Like her (Mid Summer Music), I’ve always underrated him and may lightning strike twice,” he said.
“This bloke has flown under my guard as well.”
Ready To Rip is expected to continue on for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival features, Moody naming the $220,000 Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) back at Caulfield on August 18 as their next up assignment.
“We’re still learning about him,” Moody said.
“But what we know already is that he’s a very honest, genuine horse with a fair share of ability.
“His owners deliberately missed this year’s winter carnival in Brisbane to give him his best chance down here and he’s made the decision a good one.”
