Megem’s Boy Scores Upset Beaufine Stakes 2012 Result

Ascot horseman Stan Bates celebrated back-to-back wins in the 2012 Beaufine Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday after his double figure roughie Megem’s Boy scored an upset win in the WA feature.

Following the success of the now Morphettville-trained All Friared Up 12 months ago, six-year-old Danehill Dancer gelding Megem’s Boy overcame the odds with a good three quarter length win in this year’s $80,000 Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m).

It was an impressive effort from the $16 chance and dual WA Jockey Premiership winning jockey William Pike who got the better of Jim Taylor’s Summer Scorcher winning mare Latoria ($4.80), Megem’s Boy producing his customary late burst to run her down from their midfield position.

Finishing off the winning Beaufine Stakes trifecta was another outsider with the Brent Larsson-trained Hadabeclorka ($41) crossing a length off Megem’s Boy.

The $2.80 favorite Right Time meanwhile finished a further one and a quarter lengths away fourth, trainer Paul Jordon’s fears of the horse attracting a 10 point penalty for a win failing to eventuate.

Megem’s Boy, who appreciated the white hot speed in Saturday’s race set by early leader Noname City, has now won 10 of their 52 career starts for over $308,000 in prize money.

Bates certainly didn’t expect Megem’s Boy to beat them home in the Beaufine and was full of praise for both hoop and horse after the shock win.

“You could knock me over with a feather in all honesty but I say that every time he wins a race,” Bates said.

“He’s just done a wonderful job this horse.

“As soon as Pike gets on he’s a different horse. He just has him that little bit closer.

“We stepped his work up since his last run and it’s obviously made a lot of difference.

“It wasn’t that long ago I was pleading with the handicapper to drop him back to a midweek race.”
