While the bookies continue to spruik Gai Waterhouse’s 2YO Autumn Triple Crown winner Pierro ahead of the Golden Rose in Sydney this September, his trainer has her eyes firmly on the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival riches naming the Caulfield Guineas and 2012 Cox Plate as the colt’s two main aims this time in.
The opening Group 1 race of the new season, the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) runs at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday September 15 and rising Lonhro three-year-old Pierro is the firm favourite in the futures odds for the classic.
It is unsurprising considering the undefeated young gun has amassed over $2.9 million in prize money from their six turf triumphs to date, Pierro’s biggest achievement being the Golden Slipper – Sires Produce – Champagne Stakes triple during April.
Despite the Golden Rose hype, and while not denying Pierro’s presence in the feature, Waterhouse is certainly more focused on the upcoming majors across the border that give her the luxury of more time to get the horse back to race fitness.
“I haven’t set his first race yet, I’ll just let him get fit but I am very happy with how he has come back,” she said.
“It (the Golden Rose) is an option, it is an option, I just want to see how he goes in the next three weeks.
“I haven’t mapped that far, I am happy with how he has returned, he is working very nicely but he has only had two pieces of pace work.
“It is just a bit too new to say exactly where he is at but in three weeks’ time I’ll be in a position to say more and confirm what we will do with him.”
She was however quick to name the $1 million Group 1 The Age Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 13 and the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 27 as the big name goals for Pierro this campaign, races that if they are successful in will make them one of the most valuable stallion prospects in Australia.
“The (Caulfield) Guineas and Cox Plate are my two main objectives with Pierro, they are the races that will undeniably make him Australia’s most desirable colt,” Waterhouse said this week.
“All the other races are added bonuses.”
Nominations for both the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate 2012 will be taken by Racing Victoria on Tuesday August 7, 2012.
Pierro is currently the $9 second elect in the futures Cox Plate odds at bookmaker.com.au behind another unbeaten youngster, Mark Kavanagh’s boom filly Atlantic Jewel.
