Avoid Lightning Continues Streak in 2012 Lightning Stakes

Promising South Australian sprinter Avoid Lightning took her winning streak to four straight races when excelling in wet conditions in the Listed $80,000 2012 Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphetville.

The rising four-year-old showed she was more than ready for black-type racing as she produced a strong finish to gallop well clear of her rivals and win by more than two lengths.

After targeting the daughter of Blevic towards the Adelaide feature, trainer David Jolly’s confidence grew after rain fell heavily in the lead-up to Saturday.

“I was very confident in her preparation,” Jolly said.

“When we had a lot of rain I became more confident as she is superior on wet ground.”

Jolly is now considering taking the rising four-year-old to Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival, suggesting she has plenty of qualities that would make her competitive in the early spring.

“She’d only been beating the locals but after Saturday we’ve got a bit more of a line on her,” Jolly said.

“We peaked her for this but she’s rock-hard fit so she might have a crack in the early spring when the tracks are wet.”

Avoid Lightning has now won five of six career starts, with Saturday’s race the first time she had beaten horses outside of the local Adelaide competition.

Melbourne-based horses rounded out the placings in the Lightning Stakes, with Vatican coming home strongly to take second and short-priced favourite Le Societe finishing third.

After pre-race favourite Platelet was scratched, Le Societe was backed into $2.15 but never looked like challenging the local hope in the straight.
