Winter Challenge 2012 – Betting Tips

Saturday’s Listed 2012 Winter Challenge (1600m) stands as the final black-type event in Sydney for the season and as such is likely attract plenty of attention from punters across the country.

If the market is anything to go by, the Warwick Farm feature is set to be a close encounter with Forty Thirty ($4.40) and Irish Dream ($4.60) difficult to split at the top of the market.

Following closely is David Payne-trained gelding Winning Glory ($5.50) who is just ahead of Erewhon ($6.50) and topweight King Lionheart ($7.00).

Other horses set to contest the Winter Challenge include Spinnawitch ($9.00) and Bede Murray-trained World Wide ($13.00).

Unsure who to back in this quality Warwick Farm event? Keep reading as the hard work has been done for you, with the Races.com.au team providing their best winning selections.

To Win

#10 Spinnawitch $9.00

There are plenty more favoured in the market but Spinnawitch returned impressively from a 14-month absence last start and we are tipping her to improve second time out.

The lightly-raced mare won a BM83 by nearly two lengths on July 14 and showed she is a black-type horse earlier in her career when placing twice at Group level.

Jarrod Austin has recently taken over training duties from owner Denise McGrath and has the rising six-year-old in good order.

To Place

#1 King Lionheart $7.00 and #2 Forty Thirty $4.40

King Lionheart struggled first-up over 1400 metres but should appreciate the step up in distance and is the class horse in the race.

A former Group 2 winner, the Gai Waterhouse gelding has drawn well in barrier three and will have star jockey Nash Rawiller in the saddle.

Forty Thirty has been a picture of consistency this preparation and is tough to leave out of the top three.

Hasn’t finished outside the top three in her six most recent starts and should have enough talent to again finish near the front of the field.
