Rising nine-year-old, internationally performed sprinter Green Birdie is the genuine market mover continuing to firm in their price to win the Bletchingly Stakes 2012 at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday.
The now Tony Vasil-trained Catbird gelding raced in Australia for the first time in nearly six years last start finishing an unlucky seventh to Platelet in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Cauflield on July 14.
They are ready to bounce back and return to form second-up on Saturday however drawing a better gate and having had the experience back down under.
After opening as a $4.40 chance through bookmaker.com.au to win the $125,000 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) Green Birdie has been heavily backed and is now into $3.
While some of that price deduction is due to the three early scratchings from the field with Heart Of Dreams, Tariana and Diplomatic Force all withdrawn, there has also been consistent money for the evergreen veteran and former Singapore Group 1 winner in the Bletchingly Stakes odds.
That money has been well invested according to connections who are confident in Green Birdie’s ability and attitude heading into the weekend’s race.
“When you get an older horse like him, you can train them up and trial them and they can show all the signs but until you get them to the races you never really know,” Aquanita racing manager Sam Doran said of their first-up run.
“We were quite happy with the way he hit the line (in the Monash), it was a pleasing effort and it indicated there’s a bit of life in the old horse.
“We always thought that the extra 100 metres would suit him as an older horse.
“We had to ride him back in the Monash from gate 17. With gate two this week we’d expect him to be right there.”
Second favourite in the Bletchingly Stakes odds is then three-year-old Zamorar who has been backed in from $5 to $4.50.
Last seen running a brave third in the Monash the David Bourne-trained gelding has been racing very consistently in Melbourne against this class and is a genuine chance at an upset if they get the better run.
Other notable horses to firm include Darren Weir’s classy mare Royal Bender ($12 into $10) who was beaten a nose in the Monash, and Peter Morgan’s Group 2 winning General Nediym four-year-old Dusty Star ($14 into $12).
The Peter Moody-trained third elect Ready To Rip meanwhile has eased out in their quote from $5 to $6, punters shying away from the last-start Flemington winner who makes their Caulfield debut this weekend.
