2012 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Nominations & Dates

Racing Victoria has officially released the nomination and final acceptance dates for all of the upcoming Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival 2012 majors including those for the festival’s headline event, the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

2012 Caulfield Cup

The $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) is set to run at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday October 20, 2012 and is the first of the big spring majors.

It is also the first leg of the coveted spring cups double that concludes with the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November.

Like the Melbourne Cup this year’s edition of the Caulfield Cup is expected to feature a number of international raiders on a plunder down under.

The major Caulfield Cup dates to note are nominations which are released on Tuesday August 7 and the Caulfield Cup 2012 final field out on October 16.

2012 Cox Plate

The $3 million Group 1 Tatt’s Cox Plate (2040m) is Australasia’s weight-for-age championship and is known as the ‘race where legends are made’.

Run at Moonee Valley Racecourse this year on Saturday October 27 it is the second leg of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival triple major and attracts only the highest class WFA stars.

Cox Plate 2012 nominations are taken on the same day as those for the Caulfield Cup, Tuesday August 8, while the Cox Plate final acceptances revealing the field will be out on October 23.

2012 Melbourne Cup

The richest and most well-known race held in Australia each year, the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) is in fact the most lucrative handicap in the world.

Attracting the world’s best stayers this year’s Melbourne Cup field is expected to feature a bumper number of European visitors out to steal our ‘Loving Trophy’.

Due to run as Flemington Race 7 at Flemington on Tuesday November 6, 2012 the Melbourne Cup is the race every Aussie needs to have a punt on and tune in for.

2012 Victoria Derby

Held on the opening meeting of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival, the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) runs at Flemington on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup which this year falls on November 3.

One of the country’s premier events for three-year-olds stayers the Victoria Derby is one of the most popular races for punters to enjoy a bet on in the spring.

Victoria Derby Day is also penciled in to many a racing fan’s diary as it is also the day the highly anticipated Melbourne Cup final field and barrier draw is released.

The $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) is the three-year-old fillies’ highlight race during the spring, run at Flemington on the third day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Held on the Thursday after the Melbourne Cup the 2012 Crown Oaks date is November 8 and as always the race is tipped to attract plenty of young talented staying types.

2012 Patinack Farm Classic

The $1 million Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) is one of two Group 1 features held at Flemington Racecourse on the closing day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival – Emirates Stakes Day, which is due to run this year on Saturday November 10, 2012.

For the past two years the Patinack Farm Classic has belonged to the world’s best mare Black Caviar who could return to defend her dual crown in the sprint feature again in 2012.
