Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
It is shaping up as an intriguing and tight Bletchingly Stakes 2012 betting affair at Caulfield this Saturday with veteran sprinter Green Birdie the narrow favourite over three-year-old Zamorar and four-year-old Ready To Rip in the early markets.
It may have been six years between drinks in Australia for veteran sprinter Green Birdie but the bookies believe they can bounce back in the $125,000 Group 3 Bletchignly Stakes (1200m).
The now Tony Vasil-trained Catbird eight-year-old is looking for their first win on Aussie turf since May of 2006 when they took out the Blue Sapphire Classic over the same track and distance at just their third career starts.
Over half a decade later and with five and a half years racing overseas in Hong Kong and the like, Green Birdie is back and ready to atone for their first-up seventh to Platelet in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on July 14.
Away tardily from their horror barrier 15 of 15 draw in the Monash Stakes, Green Birdie struggled to get a clear run and also struggled with the Heavy (9) course but was far from disgraced when beaten three and a half lengths.
The Bletchingly Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au suggest Green Birdie can improve significantly on that from gate two of 15 this weekend, the 2011 Krisflyer International Sprint champion opening the $4.40 favourite.
Green Birdie is followed in the Bletchingly Stakes betting markets by $5 co second elects Zamorar and Ready To Rip.
Drawn one outside of the favourite in barrier three David Bourne’s progressive Scandal Keeper three-year-old Zamorar has been in flying form over their 10 start career having finished out of the money on just two occasions.
With a quartet of wins up their sleeve Zamorar is out to break their black type duck this weekend and comes off two good stakes placings, firstly a second to Riziz in the Listed AR Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington and then most recently a close third in the Monash Stakes.
Ready To Rip meanwhile will be out to maintain his flawless record under new trainer Peter Moody.
The only last start winner in the Bletchingly Stakes field this year the More Than Ready four-year-old debuted for Moody on July 7 and won the Listed All Victorian Sprint Final (1200m) at Flemington.
Following the top three in the Bletchingly Stakes 2012 odds are then the likes of David Hayes’ 2011 Oakleigh Plate winner Eagle Falls ($10), the Darren Weir-trained Monash Stakes runner-up Royal Bender ($12), resuming dual Group 1 champion Heart Of Dreams ($13) and consistent General Nediym four-year-old Dusty Star ($14).
