Platelet Headlines 2012 Lighting Stakes Field

In-form Victorian three-year-old Platelet heads a 12-horse field named to run in the Listed $80,000 2012 Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Warwick Farm this weekend.

The Darren Weir-trained filly is chasing a fourth consecutive victory after proving a picture of consistency during an excellent winter preparation.

A daughter of Strategic, the rising four-year-old was particularly impressive last start when beating a host of more highly-rated horses to win the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).

Fourth in the John Monash Stakes was promising filly Le Societe who will also make the trip west for the Adelaide feature.

The lightly-raced three-year-old has signalled plenty of potential early in her career, winning three times from five starts.

In a rare race that is open to both two and three-year-old fillies, exciting juvenile Diamond Earth will step up to take on her more experienced rivals.

Trained by Anthony Cummings, the daughter of Choisir has recorded three victories from eight starts and already brought home more than $450,000 in prize money.

Cummings said he was not concerned about facing the older horses after watching her in trackwork on Saturday.

“She galloped really well at Caulfield on Saturday morning,” Cummings said.

“I’m pretty happy with her. I think she will be competitive.”

Stepping up to Listed level for the first time is local filly Avoid Lighting who has been in excellent form in her home city.

The David Jolly-trained youngster has won four of five career starts including her last three consecutively.

Also stepping up in class but in form is Comearoundsundown who was won his two most recent starts at the track.

The promising Brian Mueller-trained filly has won five of ten career outings.

Other horses included in the Lightning Stakes field are Robert Smerdon-trained Demasheen and Richard Jolly-trained Draw Forward.
