Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Classy local mare Latoria may have a wide draw to overcome in Saturday’s Beaufine Stakes 2012 at Belmont Park but her Bullsbrook based trainer Jim Taylor remains quietly confident.
The five-year-old daughter of Oratorio drew gate 10 of 14 at nomination stage for the $80,000 Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m), the final field and amended gates to be released shortly.
Despite the draw Taylor believes the resuming Latoria, who has a nice first-up record, is still one of the top chances for the sprint clash.
A winner of seven of her 14 starts to date Latoria has finished out of the money on just two occasions.
During the Perth Summer Racing Carnival she was unbeaten in a stunning three start streak that culminated win a win in the Listed Schweppes Summer Scorcher (1000m) at Ascot on New Year’s Eve.
She has also had five runs at Belmont Park for three wins a second and a third, her debut at the track producing an impressive five length romp over 1000m back in June of last year.
After an 11 week break following her Summer Scorcher success Latoria resumed at Ascot on March 17 and ran a gallant first-up fourth beaten under two lengths by fellow Beaufine Stakes nominee Werd in the Listed WATC Stakes (1100m).
She was last seen running a length away third to WATC Stakes runner-up Power Princess in the Listed Miss Andretti Stakes (1200m) also at Ascot on March 31, Taylor certain she is close to a return visit to the winners’ stall.
In a quiet trial on Monday she easily won over Side Splitter at Belmont and Taylor hopes for a similar effort under race conditions on Saturday despite his concerns over the short sprint distance.
“She might not quite be as zippy as she used to be and might be better over 1100 and 1200 (metres),” Taylor said.
“But with the blinkers on she’s usually a lot sharper.
“She’s only half a kilo off the minimum (with 54.5kg) and would be hard to beat if she’s at her top.
“That remains to be seen.”
