Hour Of Peril Takes 2012 Tattersall’s Mile

A smart ride by in-form jockey Jeff Lloyd saw Patinack gelding Hour Of Peril claim an upset victory in Saturday’s Listed $80,000 2012 Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

While many more fancied rivals worked hard at the front to push for the lead, Lloyd remained patient on the $14.00 chance, keeping him back and on the rail until the final 400 metres.

It was a move that paid dividends, with the four-year-old showing he had plenty left in reserve to accelerate down the inside and score a two-length victory ahead of Topping and Carry Me Bluey.

It was the first black-type win of the Gold Coast-based gelding’s career and Lloyd praised his ability to get through the ground on a wet Eagle Farm track.

“We were near the back of the field and just took our time,” Lloyd said.

“It was just a matter of switching him off early. He is definitely a lot better on a wet track.

“He gets through it and he quickens well which a lot of horses can’t do on that sort of surface.”

Despite receiving little attention from punters, Patinack foreman Brett Killion was always confident the rising five-year-old would excel in the conditions.

“I wasn’t overly surprised that he won. We knew he had the ability and I knew he would hit the line well,” Killion said.

“He loves soft going. He can sprint on it and as you saw today he was near last on the turn and came through strongly.”

As the field hit the straight, multiple black-type winner Belltone held the lead and looked destined for a third straight victory but was unable to finish off the race and laboured to finish in seventh position.

Hour Of Peril’s victory took his overall career record to five wins from 24 starts and his prize pool to more than $200,000.
