Melbourne Spring Possibility for Soapbox

Anthony Cummings-trained filly Soapbox could be headed for Melbourne’s prestigious Spring Racing Carnival if she can continue to improve on her impressive win at Gosford on Wednesday.

The talented youngster showed a sharp turn of foot to back up a Rosehill runner-up finish earlier this month with a solid victory in the $35,000 Gosford Memberships Handicap.

After getting out of the gates well, the daughter of Exceed and Excel was held just off the pace before opening up a comfortable lead in the straight to win by nearly a length ahead of Agulhas.

Cummings’ son Edward  was on hand at Gosford for the race and highlighted the Group 1 Flight Stakes and the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) as potential spring aims for the promising two-year-old.

“She’s got to prove that she can get over that trip, she’s built like that,” Cummings said.

“But obviously there are stakes races like the Flight Stakes and Thousand Guineas if she’s up to it.”

Lightly raced for just three career starts, Soapbox struggled on debut at Cantebury but signalled plenty of potential next start when narrowly beaten by Gai Waterhouse youngster Sherocksmyworld.

Another Anthony Cummings-trained juvenile likely to start at the elite level as in the spring is Fastnet Rock colt Your Song.

After debuting with a third-place effort at Canterbury in June, the rising three-year-old recorded two straight victories, including a dominant 1 1/2 length win in the $85,000 Pluck @ Vinery Handicap at Rosehill on July 7.

The impressive colt is likely to return in the Up And Coming Stakes next month before being targeted at the Group 1 Golden Rose on September 15.

The first Group 1 event of the 2012-2013 season, the $1 million Golden Rose is set to deliver an explosive start to spring racing with autumn stars Pierro and Samaready likely starters.
