African Pulse Given Pre-Spring Test

Talented colt African Pulse will line up in Saturday’s Super Voibis 3YO (1100m) before a spring preparation that is likely to feature more Group 1 level attempts after a tough autumn campaign.

Group 1 runner African Pulse will start at Flemington on Saturday

From two starts in the top grade in the autumn, the promising youngster was unable to finish better than ninth in the Newmarket Handicap and the Oakleigh Plate.

The son of Johannesburg earned his quick rise in class after a promising start to his career, winning three of his first four starts.

But African Pulse has been unable to score success since, rounding out his autumn campaign with a fourth-place effort in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes and a fifth in the Gosford Guineas.

Trainer Michael Moroney said top level success is not too far away and is expecting to see an improved product at Melbourne’s Spring Carnival.

He said he did not want to keep him out of racing for too long and sees Saturday’s sprint at Flemington as an ideal opportunity to resume.

“Being a colt still, we tend not to give them too long out,” Moroney said.

“The other added advantage is that he’s got good form on wet tracks so he can kick off now.”

African Pulse will be ridden by apprentice Harry Kasim this weekend, allowing for a three kilogram claim.

Also nominated for the Super Voibis 3YO Handicap at Flemington this weekend is exciting Peter Moody-trained colt Golden Archer.

A winner of six of 10 starts, the three-year-old is returning from a 10-month break, having not raced since the Caulfield Guineas Prelude last September.

The Rock Of Gibraltar three-year-old had a highly succesful two-year-old career that included winning three consecutive races at Listed level.

The good results continued as a three-year-old, finishing runner-up to Sepoy in the Vain Stakes and winning the Group 3 McNeil Stakes before struggling in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.
