This Saturday the black type winter racing action continues in Perth with Belmont Racecourse to host the Belmont Classic 2012, nominations for which have now been released.
A total of 16 three-year-olds make up the early entries for this year’s edition of the $80,000 Listed Belmont Classic (2200m), a race won 12 months ago by the Stan Bates-trained Miss Tipsy Topsy.
Some of the more notable Belmont Classic nominations this year include Dan Morton’s last start winner at the track and distance He’s Henry, promising Love A Dane gelding Incentive Scheme out to break their maiden status, up and coming Redoutable gelding Wonorg, the Paul Roberts-trained Shoot For Glory, and the Adam Durrant-trained Jim ‘N’ Jim who comes off a fifth in the Listed Belmont Oaks (2000m) from July 7.
Phil Humann’s Belmont Oaks champion Rantorini is also set to back up in the Belmont Classic on the weekend, the ultra-consistent Supranto filly out for her fourth career win from eight starts and third black type having also saluted in the Listed Raconteur Stakes (1500m) at Ascot back in March.
Prior to her Belmont Oaks success Rantorini also ran an eye catching fourth to Rohan in the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m) when beaten by less than two lengths.
If successful on Saturday Rantorini will be handing the Ascot-based Humann with his second Belmont Classic success following Dexian who enjoyed the Dayana Plate – Belmont Classic double victory back in 2002.
Rantorini suffered some minor cuts to her hind leg after her Oaks win but is reportedly back to full fitness and ready for her next assignment.
“She had a couple of nicks on her back leg but they have cleared now and she is going to be OK to run in the Classic,” Humann said.
“She raced wide without cover and I was impressed with the way she ran over them (in the Oaks).
“Everything is going well.”
Also among the hopeful youngsters is Fred Kersley’s exciting Tiger Hill gelding Operational who won the Dayana Plate (2000m) at Belmont Park on July 7 a full four seconds faster than Rantorini’s winning time in the Belmont Oaks.
Operational is one of three entries for ace horseman Kersley along with Dayana Plate runner-up Confianza and More Than Ready filly Ready On Time coming off a sixth in the Belmont Oaks.
