Weir Wins 2012 Sir John Monash Stakes Quinella

Darren Weir’s flying young filly Platelet saluted in her third straight turf triumph on Saturday, the progressive three-year-old winning the Sir John Monash Stakes 2012 at Caulfield in an upset quinella with stablemate Royal Bender for her Warrnambool-based trainer.

The daughter of Strategic was coming off back-to-back Melbourne wins this winter, most recently carrying 59kg to victory over 1200-metres at Caulfield, and relished the drop back to 56kg for Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).

Relishing also the Heavy (8) rated track Platelet ($12) held on in a thrilling finish to beat home the fellow Weir-trained Royal Bender, a $26 roughie in the market who gave the eventual winner one hell of a challenge over the last 100-metres, by a nose giving Weir the Sir John Monash Stakes quinella.

“It’s hard enough to get a winner, let alone the quinella,” an excited Weir said on Saturday.

A further length and a half away third was the $4.80 favourite Zamorar just ahead of Peter Moody’s lightly-raced filly and second fancy Le Societe ($5.50).

Weir was also represented in the race by last year’s runner-up Rue Maple who despite starting as a $7 chance only managed to finish seven and a quarter lengths away 13th.

Despite Rue Maple’s disappointing finish Weir was thrilled with his two underdogs coming up trumps.

“I was happy with the order of the three of them going into the race, but other than Platelet, who had won a Group 3 race (the Thoroughbred Club Stakes at Caulfield last October), I wasn’t sure whether the others were up to it,” he said.

“Rue Maple, she was probably the disappointing one, but the other two ran great.

“After they’d gone 300-metres I thought they were all just where I wanted them to be, and that’s how it panned out, except for Rue Maple.”

It was a wonderful Sir John Monash Stakes result for Platelet’s apprentice jockey Damian Lane who celebrated his first black type victory.

“I can’t thank Darren and the owners enough for the opportunity,” Lane said after the win.

“I knew I could ride as good as the seniors, but to be given the opportunity, I’m very thankful for.

“She’s run super today. She’s in super form and she won really well.”

Weir said both Platelet and Royal Bender would likely back up in Victoria’s final black type of the season, the $125,000 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) back at Caulfield on July 28.

“I’ll probably keep her (Platelet) going now that she’s in such great form and run her in the Bletchingly Stakes later this month,” he said.

“And with Royal Bender, she too did a great job, I’m now glad we started her after she returned from Brisbane where she was placed at Eagle Farm.

“We’ll just head down that (Bletchingly) path.

“Hopefully we can keep them fit and well and sound and who knows what happens.”
