2012 Grafton Cup Results – Shamardashing Wins in Patinack Quinella

Nathan Tinkler’s Patinack Farm operation took out the pinnacle event of the Clarence River Jockey Club’s $1 million July Carnival this afternoon with race favourite Shamardashing and betting outsider Saint Encosta running the Grafton Cup 2012 quinella.

Shamardashing wins the 2012 Grafton Cup

Shamardal five-year-old Shamardashing jumped as the $3.20 favourite to win the $150,000 Listed Maclean Bowling Club Grafton Cup (2350m) following a winter prep full of merit.

Improving on their last start fourth to Ginga Dude in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm, the John Thompson-trained Shamardashing enjoyed the step back in class and step up in distance provided to them in the Grafton Cup.

In a surprise finish their out-of-form stablemate Saint Encosta ($13) managed to get a nice trail on their back over the final couple of hundred metres to finish a length and a quarter away second.

Defending Grafton Cup champ Warrior Within ($5) was just under a length further back, a game effort considering their 58kg topweight, in a photo finish for third with a gallant fourth placed Gazza Guru ($6).

In a golden ride from in-form veteran jockey Jeff Lloyd, Shamardashing over-raced early before settling into third on the outside with Grafton Cup Prelude winner Blinkin Easy leading the field up until the home straight.

With 800-metres left to travel Lloyd asked Shamardashing for a little more, which they gave, moving up to share the lead before pulling away from the other challengers, the superior staying getting the job done on the day to win the Grafton Cup.

Lloyd, who one race earlier also enjoyed success on the Thompson-trained  Sookie in the Inglis Bonus Plate, was thrilled to hear the big cheer from the crowd as he saluted on the punters’ pick.

“This is a nice one, to come here and win their cup race it’s pretty special,” he said.

“It is great to see the support that these types of country meetings get.

“It’s just a different type of atmosphere.”

Also pleased with the performance from both horse and hoop was Patinack Farm foreman Brett Killion.

“His run last start was full of merit and today he had a good run,” Killion said of Shamardashing.

“He sprinted well. He took care of them pretty easy.

“If ever a horse deserves it it’s him he’s always so honest, he’s a real warhorse.

“He could probably do another six runs he could handle it he’s tough.”
