Startsmeup Heads South to Chase 2012 Winter Stakes Glory

Gold Coast gelding Startsmeup will be the only Queensland horse in the Listed $100,000 2012 Winter Stakes (1400m) and the four-year-old takes excellent form with him.

Startsmeup heads to Sydney for a tilt at the Winter Stakes

After a disappointing summer campaign, the Gillian Heinrich-trained horse kicked off his winter campaign on a winning note when first in the Ipswich Dash on June 16.

With in-form Jeff Lloyd on board, the four-year-old stormed home on the tight-turning Ipswich track to win by nearly a length ahead of nearest rival Liesele.

Lloyd will also make the trip to Sydney for the Winter Stakes, something that Heinrich believes will benefit the son of Danzero.

“That’s always a plus because Jeff rode him to win last start at Ipswich and also rode him in a trial last week,” Heinrich said.

Startsmeup is no stranger to the Warwick Farm track, having finished third to Pinwheel in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes at the venue last August.

Heinrich is confident the talented gelding is in fine form and is a great chance to record his first victory at stakes level this weekend.

“The horse looks beautiful and is a lot more mature this time in,” Heinrich said.

“I was very happy with his gallop this morning. His blood is good. It’s all up to him and Jeff now.”

Final acceptances will be made this morning but one horse that is almost certain to join the Queenslander in the final field is Joe Pride-trained See The World.

The talented five-year-old is in terrific form and is chasing a third consecutive victory after winning the Listed Takover Target Stakes before backing it up in the Westend Maza BM95 at Rosehill last weekend.

Trainer Pride is not concerned by the short turnaround, suggesting the Danzero gelding has recovered well from Saturday’s hit-out.

“I’m pretty sure he will run. I’ve had a look at the field and he will be more than competitive,” Pride said.
