Full Sir John Monash Stakes Field 2012

The latest end-of-season Victorian black type is set to run at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday with a capacity field accepted for the 2012 Sir John Monash Stakes.

Secret Flyer

Secret Flyer is back to defend their title in the 2012 Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday

Due to jump as Caulfield Race 6 at 3:07pm, the $100,000 Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) has this year drawn 16 starters plus a sole emergency.

The top rated of the hopefuls is the now Tony Vasil-trained veteran Green Birdie racing in Australia for the first time since their fourth in the 2006 Coolmore Stud Stakes during Flemington’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

After five years spent racing in Hong Kong the Catbird eight-year-old, winner of the 2010 Group 1 Krisflyer International Sprint in Singapore, returns to Melbourne where they started their career.

They have suffered an early blow however drawing the extreme outside gate 17 of 17 in the Sir John Monash Stakes barriers with Damien Oliver to ride.

Also drawn poorly for Saturday are the likes of Leon Corstens’ evergreen six-year-old Alpha Proxima (16), Darren Weir’s consistent Rubiton mare Rue Maple (15) who ran second from barrier six in this race last year, the Robbie Laing-trained Dash For Cash colt Grand Britannia (14) who has won just one of their 16 starts to date, and last start Listed Creswick Stakes runner-up at Flemington Zamorar (13).

Horses that had better luck with the Monash gates include the Mick Price-trained duo of Tariana (two) coming off a big four and a half length win over 1200m at the track and Night War (six) who races for their first time since their Perth Magic Millions 3YO Stakes win in February, Peter Moody’s progressive Anabaa filly Le Societe (three) and the Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Rubiton Stakes minor placegetter Hot Spin (four).

Other notable chances in the Sir John Monash Stakes field this year include David Hayes’ Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner from 2011 Eagle Falls, local Mossman gelding Second Effort to be ridden by Glen Boss from barrier 10, Weir’s second runner Royal Bender and defending champ Secret Flyer.
