Gatewood Opens as 2012 Melbourne Cup Chance

John Gosden’s dream of saddling up a horse in the Melbourne Cup 2012 could become a reality this spring with his improving stayer Gatewood heading towards a shot at the world’s richest handicap.

The Newmarket-based trainer named the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), to run at Victoria’s famous Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday November 6, as a possible end of year goal for his Galileo stallion Gatewood after their flying form at home in Britain this time out.

The lightly-raced four-year-old is undefeated this prep taking their impressive record to four wins from six career starts thanks to three straight turf triumphs since resuming off a 10 month break in mid may.

Ridden by William Buick all three times, Buick also having been in the saddle for their first ever victory when winning by four lengths over 1991-metres at Sailsbury last June, Gatewood also broke their black-type maiden status last start.

After wins at York and Epsom Downs over 2092m and 2028m respectively, Gatewood chased down the leaders and hit the front inside the final furlong in an excellent performance to win the Listed Wolferton Handicap (2011m) at Royal Ascot on June 22.

They could now be heading down under for an international raid targeting the ‘race that stops a nation’, but must first qualify for the Melbourne Cup.

“Gatewood could be a possible Melbourne Cup horse but he needs to qualify by winning a Group race,” Gosden said.

“He could run in the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood.”

The Group 3 Glorious Stakes (2414m) runs at Goodwood during the ‘Glorious Goodwood’ festival on August 3, 2012.

Gatewood is yet to be added into the pre-nomination Melbourne Cup odds at Aussie bookmakers including our preferred bookmaker.com.au but pays around $16 at the English bookies.

The shortest priced hopeful in the Melbourne Cup betting markets at bookmaker.com.au are Americain and Dunaden at $19 each, the French-trained duo having won the 2010 and 2011 Melbourne Cups respectively.
