Distance No Concern as Rantorini Wins 2012 Belmont Oaks

Talented filly Rantorini added a second black-type victory to her resume on Saturday when she took top honours in the Listed $80,000 2012 Belmont Oaks (2000m).

The Phil Humann-trained three-year-old proved impressive in her first step up to 2000 metres, coming from sixth position at the 800m post to storm home and win by nearly a length ahead of favourite Just Wicked.

After showing her ability to handle the distance, Humann said she would again step up in the $80,000 Belmont Classic (2200m) on July 21.

“She handled the step up to 2000m in great style today,” Humann said.

“I’m sure the 2200m will not be a problem to her.”

Despite getting stuck three wide, jockey Shaun O’Donnell always believed the daughter of Supranto had the class to win the fillies’ feature.

“The filly was very relaxed out there and I didn’t worry that we were covering extra ground,” said O”Donnell.

“Rantorini showed class when I won the Raconteur Stakes on her over 1500 metres at Ascot in March.”

From just seven career starts, Rantorini has recorded three victories and collected more than $115,000 in prize money.

The promising filly will take on her colts and geldings in the Belmont Classic in a field that is likely to include Fred Kersley-trained pair Operational and Confianza.

The talented duo gave Kersley a quinella on Saturday in the $50,000 Dayana Plate (2000m) after bothing coming from the back of the field at the final turn.

Second favourite Operational took top honours by 2 1/2 lengths but it was a particularly good effort from Confianza who was rated a $26.00 winning chance prior to the race.
