Adnocon Wins 2012 Ascot Handicap

Gerald Ryan’s Sydney visitor Adnocon became a triple stakes winner over the weekend with their big run in the 2012 Ascot Handicap at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse.

Adnocon and Damian Browne

Adnocon and Damian Browne combined to win the 2012 Ascot Handicap at Eagle Farm

The six-year-old Clang gelding was coming off a 21 day break after a first-up third when defending their dual titles in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich on June 16.

Wet tracks at the Sunshine Coast saw Ryan bypass the Glasshouse Handicap with Adnocon who more than made up for the missed event with their smart victory in Saturday’s $80,000 Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m).

Ridden by Damian Browne Adnocon ($3.10) appreciated the absence of scratched frontrunner Audacious Spirit as well as their inside barrier one draw and after running a brilliant final 600-metres in under 34 seconds, were able to run down and beat home the Tracy Green-trained The Sixties ($6) by one and a quarter lengths.

In a photo finish for the minor placings Norm Hilton’s 59kg topweight Bold Glance ($10) then finished off the winning Ascot Handicap trifecta a further nose away.

“As it was I was struggling to stay in touch with them and they weren’t going that hard, so (Audacious Spirit) coming out probably was a blessing that way,” Browne said.

Less than two lengths separated the first six over the line with $3 favourite Griffon the unlucky sixth placegetter on the day.

Adnocon has now won nine of their 47 starts for $571,550 in prize money and Ryan said they would now head towards the $80,000 Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) back at Eagle Farm on July 21.

“There’s nothing else around so we will go to the Tatt’s Mile now,” he said.

“He loves it up here in Queensland.”
