Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
In-form Kiwi galloper Booming has opened as the pronounced favourite in the 2012 Queen’s Cup odds ahead of the popular winter feature running at Eagle Farm this Saturday.
Coming off a gallant second to former New Zealander Ginga Dude in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago, Jeff Lynds’ veteran Don Eduardo gelding is now favourite to go one better and win the $150,000 Group 3 Bmag Queen’s Cup (3200m) on the weekend.
The seven-year-old, who has twice run well over the two-miles, tops the Queen’s Cup 2012 odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $2.90 despite having to carry the 59kg topweight of the field.
They give a minimum 3.5 kilos to their rivals but their good lead-up run and experience over the testing distance having run fourth to Shez Sinsational in this year’s Auckland Cup and second in the same Group 1 NZ feature to Zavite in 2010 has them looking hard to beat according to the bookies.
Four other horses are at single-figure odds in the Queen’s Cup betting markets with:
- #6 Maythehorsebemagic ($3.60) – Michael Moroney’s Flemington visitor ran an eye-catching second over the 3200m in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes back home two back, come off a Tatt’s Cup seventh but going back up in distance are well positioned to post a feature race win
- #7 Roi D’Jeu ($7) – Craig Ritchie-trained six-year-old also ran second over the two-miles two back when runner-up to Adroitly at Rosehill in the mud, that was their third start over the 3200m and while they haven’t seen this track before the distance is right
- #3 Hume ($7.50) – Brian Smith’s local Zabeel eight-year-old is an old veteran who enjoyed a Group 3 win earlier in the winter before two disappointing runs, they have won just two from 11 here and it’s been a long time between drinks so best to leave based on the stats
- #4 Spechenka ($9) – Ben Ahren’s Beaudesert galloper comes off a fourth in the Caloundra Cup when beaten 10 lengths in the mud, have been more miss than hit this season and how they handkel the step up in distance will be key to their chances
Other longer priced fancied that could prove a great value Queen’s Cup bet include recent Premier’s Cup winner Fantastic Blue ($12) and the John Thompson-trained Count Encosta ($15).
