The final field for this Saturday’s 2012 Queen’s Cup at Eagle Farm Racecourse has been revealed with just 11 gallopers taking up the two mile challenge.
Due to jump as Eagle Farm Race 6 at 3:11pm, the $150,000 Group 3 Queen’s Cup (3200m) is traditionally run as the Queensland Cup and holds only Listed status.
It has been upgraded and will carry the Queen’s Cup title and Group 3 status this year however, the race rotating between states each year.
Heading the Queen’s Cup 2012 field and weights this weekend is the Jeff Lynds-trained Don Eduardo seven-year-old Booming.
The Chris Munce mount, who hails from New Zealand, will jump from barrier one with 59kg and will have to break a 103-year hoodoo to carry that much weight to victory.
Booming comes off a good second to fellow Kiwi Ginga Dude in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m) and will be having their third start over the two miles having run fourth in this year’s Auckland Cup and second in the 2010 Auckland Cup over the 3200-metres.
The next two top-weighted hopefuls are then Toowoomba galloper Fantastic Blue (barrier 10) coming off an eighth in the Ipswich Cup, and Brian Smith’s dual Group 3 winner Hume (barrier eight) both on 55.5kg.
Other exciting chances include the Ben Ahrens-trained Spechenka in gate six looking to improve on their fourth in the Caloundra Cup in the wet last Saturday, John Thompson’s late entry Shadowofexcellence and Caloundra Cup fifth placegetter Roi D’Jeu.
Roi D’Jeu’s trainer Craig Ritchie was disappointed with their Caloundra Cup effort after the Montjeu six-year-old was beaten over 15 lengths, especially after their previous second on a Heavy (10) at Rosehill in the Stayers Cup (3200m), and said he wouldn’t risk running the horse on Saturday if he wasn’t 100 percent fit.
“He definitely raced below his best,” Ritchie said.
“If I’m very happy and everything seems in order he’ll go around (in the Queen’s Cup) but if there’s any doubts at all about the horse not being at his best then we’ll stop at any stage.”
Meanwhile there are two last start winners engaged in the race with the Bryan Dias-trained veteran White City (barrier 11) seeking their third on the trot after wins at Ipswich and Rockhampton respectively, and Famous Fortune (barrier four) who comes off a bit three and a half length romp at Toowoomba four weeks ago.
