Anthony Cummings’ lightly-raced youngster Your Song will take their next step towards the iconic 2012 Golden Rose at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens in September when they race at the track this Saturday.
The Fastnet Rock colt caught Cummings’ eye right from the get go winning two barrier trials in May ahead of their debut at Canterbury on June 6, the delayed start to their career due ‘growing pains’.
“He’s a big horse who is still developing and he had the usual aches and pains for a young horse,” Cummings said.
“There has always been a glimpse of ability there but in terms of showing it he took a while.”
Ridden by Hugh Bowman the two-year-old ran a credible third over 1250-metres on a Heavy (9) track that day before breaking their maiden next start.
Lining up in a juveniles’ handicap over 1300-metres at Warwick Farm on June 23, this time with Peter Robl riding, Your Song held on in a tight finish to beat home the Angela Davis-trained She’s A Stalker by a long neck.
Originally set for a short spell ahead of the spring after their breakthrough turf triumph, a change of schedule will see Your Song shoot for back-to-back wins this weekend having been nominated for a 2YO Handicap over 1400-metres at Rosehill.
Their performance on Saturday will help Cummings’ establish the upcoming Sydney Spring Racing Carnival campaign for the horse he has earmarked for the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on Saturday September 15, 2012.
“The way the races have fallen (leading up to the Golden Rose) I would rather give him another run now over the 1400 metres before getting him ready,” Cummings explained.
After Saturday they will head to the paddock for a brief let-up before Golden Rose preparations get into full swing.
“He’ll have a week to ten days off, probably on the water walker,” Cummings said.
“Trying to go through and get him ready off one preparation might be too much but he’ll still have a fair bit of residual fitness on his side.”
Cummings narrowly missed out on Golden Rose glory last year when another crack Fastnet Rock colt from his stables, Smart Missile – who was undefeated going into the race, ran a devastatingly close second to upset winner Manawanui in the million dollar showdown.
