Booming Heads 2012 Queen’s Cup Weights

Jeff Lynds’ New Zealand raider Booming has been allocated the 59kg minimum topweight for this Saturday’s Queen’s Cup 2012 at Eagle Farm Racecourse, a weight that if the veteran carries to victory will see them break over a century long record.

Traditionally known as the Queensland Cup this year’s edition of the $150,000 quality handicap will be elevated from its Listed status to run as the Group 3 Queen’s Cup, a race that alternates between different states each year.

The sole remaining Queensland feature run over the traditional cup distance of 3200-metres, the last time the event carried the Queen’s Cup title was back in 2001 when Darren Beadman, sidelined indefinitely due to brain injuries sustained in a fall in February this year, rode the Jack Denham-trained Gillespie to a massive nine length victory over Chargold.

In the race’s 134-year history the only Queensland Cup winner to carry more than 59kg was Barallan who lumped a hefty 69kg to victory in 1909.

Last year Michael Moroney’s Victorian galloper Tinseltown impressed in a big two length win over Smoking Chimneys with 58kg on their back.

Saturday will see seven-year-old Don Eduardo gelding Booming look to go 1kg better having been allocated 59kg by Racing Queensland handicapper Nathan Bourke.

A dual Group 1 winner back home thanks to their success in the 2010 Zabeel Classic and the 2011 Thorndon Mile, Booming has had their three most recent starts in Queensland at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Two disappointing eighth place finishes firstly in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) to Mawingo and then to Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) were followed by their game second, beaten only a length by fellow Kiwi Ginga Dude, in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 23.

Stepping up in distance on Saturday should suite Booming who recently ran a good fourth to Shez Sinsational in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) back home at Ellerslie when carrying 58kg.

Their other experience over the two-miles was a second to Zavite in the 2010 Auckland Cup.

Following Booming in the 2012 Queen’s Cup weights are Paul Nolan’s recent Premier’s Cup winner Fantastic Blue and the Brian Smith-trained Zabeel eight-year-old Hume with 55.5kg.

The only other hopeful weighted above the 54kg minimum is then John Thompson’s recent Tatt’s Cup fourth placegetter Shamardashing with 54.5kg, the horse more likely to be saved for Thursday week’s $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m).
