Staying Future For 2012 Sunshine Coast Guineas Winner

Tuskegee Hawk trainer Len Treloar is predicting a staying career for the promising filly who took out the 2012 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) on Saturday.

On a heavy 10 track, the daughter of Black Hawk was always within striking distance following instructions from the trainer to jockey Michael Hellyer to ride her close to the pace.

“I warned Michael not to fall into the trap of riding her like a 2000 metre horse because she would’ve been too far back if he had done that,” Treloar said.

“I said to make use of her and put her into the race. She’s fit and likes the big roomier tracks like this one.”

The former Singapore-based trainer bought the horse as yearling in Singapore on his brother’s advice and is looking to next year’s winter carnival for her to develop into a staying type.

“The winter carnival staying races next year will be ideal for her but what we do in the meantime remains to be seen,” he said.

The win is a strong advertisement for Treloar as a trainer who relocated to the Sunshine Coast just 12 months ago.

“When I arrived back from Singapore I had no horses and basically had to start from scratch,” Treloar said.

“But I’ve gradually built my numbers back up to 26 and I’m looking to keep building on that.”

Tuskegee Hawk has made an excellent start to her career, winning four times from nine starts on her way to nearly $100,000 in prize money.

Race favourite Double Impact finished runner-up while Liam Birchley-trained Goldslick produced a strong finish to come third.
