Spring Option for 2012 Caloundra Cup Winner Shenzhou Steeds

Trainer Michael Moroney will consider a spring campaign for Shenzhou Steeds after the promising stayer produced a dominant victory in the Listed $200,000 2012 Caloundra Cup (2400m) on Saturday.

Shenzhou Steeds took out the Caloundra Cup on Saturday

It was the longest race of his career to date but the four-year-old never looked in doubt of making the trip, producing a strong finish to gallop seven lengths clear of his nearest rival.

Moroney was previously targeting next week’s Grafton Cup but is now considering the spring for the son of Ishiguru who is unbeaten from five starts in Queensland.

“The plan was to run in the Grafton Cup then give him the spring off and look at Sydney in the autumn,” Moroney said.

“But the way he won that race I haven’t completely closed the door on the spring with him.

“It’s certainly given me a bit to think about so I’ll mull it over in the next few days before I make a final decision.”

With Eddie Wilkinson in the saddle, Shenzhou Steeds was positioned mid-field before showing excellent finishing ability to leave his competition at the top of the straight.

No runner in the field looked like challenging talented gelding, who took his excellent early career record to seven wins from 15 starts.

Moroney praised Wilkinson who was also on board for his first victory at Listed level in the Ipswich Cup two weeks ago.

“That is twice where he has said where he wanted to be and what he wanted to do and he has done it perfectly each time,” Moroney said.

Shaun Dwyer-trained stayer Anudjawun finished runner-up while Winmara just edged out 2011 winner Spechenka to take third place.
