Jeffrey Lloyd is confident he is on the right horse for Saturday’s Glasshouse Handicap 2012 at the Sunshine Coast, the highly regarded jetsetting jockey partnering with the Gillian Heinrich-trained Startsmeup.
The $175,000 Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m), due to run as Caloundra Cup Day Race 6 at 3:12pm, will be the second time Lloyd jumps in the saddle of Danzero four-year-old Startsmeup.
The duo combined last start for Startsmeup’s first-up victory in a Class 6 over 1100-metres on Ipswich Cup Day, June 16, an effort Lloyd was admittedly impressed with.
“I was very impressed with the horse,” he said.
“I thought when I got on him, `whatever he does today he will improve on it’.
“He won so I was very happy. I took the (Glasshouse Handicap) ride straight away.”
It was the first turf triumph for the gelding since July of 2011 when Startsmeup was prepared by Bruce Hill; they transferred to Heinrich late last year.
While the Glasshouse will be a step up in class for Startsmeup from their effort at Ipswich, Lloyd is confident they will make the grade.
“For sure he’s up to the level,” he said.
“You can feel it when you get on him. He’s got a lot of quality.”
Lloyd meanwhile will be looking to continue a winning run at the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival having taken out the season’s final Group 1 with $14 outsider Pear Tart in the Tattersall’s Tiara at Eagle Farm on June 23.
Drawn in barrier two of 15 for Saturday Startsmeup is rated a $10 chance in the Glasshouse Handicap odds at bookmaker.com.au which are led by Belltone and Jetset Lad who share favouritism paying $4.40.
The course proper at the Sunshine Coast is currently rated a Heavy (10) and despite the rain clearing it is unlikely to be upgraded to better than a Heavy 8 or 9 by race time.
Startsmeup has twice raced on a Heavy surface when third in the 2011 Warwick Stakes and fifth over 1200m in a Gold Coast Handicap in January of that year.
Other notable hopefuls in the Glasshouse Handicap field this year include 2011 QTC Cup winner Varenna Miss ($8), Adnocon ($8) who runs in the event for the third year in a row, and 2009 Golden Slipper champion Phelan Ready ($9) who hasn’t won a race since.
