Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Two widely-drawn gallopers have opened as the equal favourites to win the 2012 Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast this Saturday with Belltone and Jetset Lad battling for top spot.
Currently both horses pay $4.40 through bookmaker.com.au to win the $175,000 Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m), due to run as Race 6 on Caloundra Cup Day at 3:12pm.
Drawn in barrier 12 with Chris Munce to ride Kelso Wood’s Brahms six-year-old Belltone is the early market mover, punters getting behind the last-start winner of the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich from June 16.
Prior to their Eye Liner win Belltone ran a good second to Celtic Dancer in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on a Heavy (10) track and the Sunshine Coast is also likely to be running as a Heavy (10) on Saturday despite the rain clearing.
One outside of Belltone in gate 13 is then the John Wheeler-trained Jetset Lad, the up-and-coming Elusive City four-year-old coming off two impressive black type seconds.
They were beaten under a quarter of a length by Belltone in the Eye Liner Stakes and then backed up last Saturday when defeated in the final stride by Firebolt in the Listed Tatt’s Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm.
A former New Zealander Jetset Lad boasts two wins and a second from six starts on Heavy tracks, most recently at New Plymouth in September last year over the Glasshouse Handicap distance (1400m) by five lengths.
Following the co-favourites in the Glasshouse Handicap betting markets are then:
- #5 Varenna Miss ($8) – Out to break a lengthy winning drought that goes back to her QTC Cup win during last year’s Brisbane Winter Carnival, comes off a seventh in the Tattersall’s Tiara and has raced in Group 1 company at her last four starts so will appreciate the drop back here, has one start on Heavy ground for one win but has never seen the track nor won over the distance
- #6 Adnocon ($8) – Gerald Ryan’s Clang six-year-old comes off a first-up third to Belltone in the Eye Liner and really only needs to improve half a length to beat them here, Sunshine Coast suits this horse as they have a great record here (4-2-1-0) and they have a decent second-up record too (8-2-0-1) but they have failed in their four starts on heavy tracks to date
- #1 Phelan Ready ($9) – If a year out of the winners stall for Varenna Miss looked an age check this horse, Phelan Ready not having won a race since their 2009 Golden Rose triumph, expect improvement on their Stradbroke Handicap 14th, they love it wet which explains their single-figure price and their third in the Prime Minister’s Cup three back proved that but with 59kg they probably can’t win
Other longer-priced hopefuls that could prove a great value Glasshouse Handicap bet to place include the Gillian Heinrich-trained Startsmeup ($10) coming off an Ipswich Cup Day victory, and even veteran New Zealand galloper Vonusti ($26) who is a Group 1 winner back home.
