Inaugural Blue Sapphire Classic 2012 This Spring

This Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is shaping up as a beauty in Victoria, a new race for three-year-olds adding to the excitement with the first edition of the 2012 Blue Sapphire Classic to run this October.

Looking to share some of the 3YO spring glory with Sydney who hosts the iconic $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) for three-year-olds at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday September 15, the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) this year introduces their own classic in the making for the age group.

Set for its inaugural running on Caulfield Guineas Day, Saturday October 13 at Caulfield Racecourse, the $250,000 Blue Sapphire Classic, or Blue Sapphire Stakes, will be run over 1200-metres.

Hoping to attract a quality field for its debut, horses that were originally among the Blue Diamond Stakes nominations during the autumn have automatically been entered for the Blue Sapphire Classic 2012.

First declarations for the set weights clash, which the MRC are hoping will gain black type status for its second anniversary in 2013, are due to be taken in September.

“We’re starting off as a new race and hopefully we get a field that warrants an upgrade to black type after the first year,” the MRC’s racing and media executive Josh Rodder said.

Sydney’s Golden Rose Stakes started back in 2003 as a non-stakes race before gaining its Group 1 status in 2009.

The MRC are also hoping that Golden Rose runners will use the Blue Sapphire Classic as a lead-up into one of the spring’s other majors for the three-year-olds, the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, Saturday November 3, 2012, a race won last spring by 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes – Golden Slipper winner Sepoy.

“We’re excited about having a three-year-old sprinting option for quality three-year-olds,” Rodder said.

“There’s the option for horses to be freshened after the Golden Rose and come back to this race and then go to the Coolmore Stud Stakes three weeks later.”
