Kelso Wood may have uncovered a star in TJ Smith winner Sizzling this winter but the dedicated Eagle Farm horseman admits to having a ‘soft spot’ for Belltone who runs in the 2012 Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast this Saturday for Caloundra Cup Day.
Six-year-old Brahms gelding Belltone has won seven of their 24 career starts so far for just over $300,000 in prize money, and while it’s not an outstanding record it is one Wood is proud of.
“Sizzling has made the season, but I have a real soft spot for Belltone,” he said.
Formerly prepared by fellow Eagle Farm trainer Paul Dawson Belltone joined Wood’s stable at the start of last year.
Wood reignited something in the horse right away as they won six of their opening seven starts for their new trainer.
“It’s not often you get a horse and win six races from seven starts in their first campaign,” Wood said.
Their summer campaign was not quite as spectacular as Belltone failed to step up in class running fifth to Listen Son in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) and seventh to Adebisi in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m).
They resumed in May and have done an excellent job during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.
After a close first-up fifth beaten just half a length by Tiger Tees in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben they went on to finish second to Celtic Dancer in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on a Heavy (10).
Last start they broke a nine month winning drought when taking out the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich on June 16 in an upset, top hoop Chris Munce aboard for their two most recent runs.
On Saturday they are likely to face Eye Liner Stakes second and third placegetters Jetset Lad and Adnocon again in the $175,000 Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m), one of the three black type features at the meeting.
Despite the top class field Wood is tipping a good run from Belltone who won’t have an issue with the predicted Slow – Heavy track.
