A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Chris Waller’s beaten WJ Healy Stakes hopeful from the weekend Tromso could back up in the 2012 Civic Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday, Waller vying for back-to-back wins in the quality handicap.
Having come off a good first-up win at Rosehill from last month, Lonhro five-year-old Tromso started an $8.50 chance in the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on the weekend.
They eventually finished four lengths away fifth to upset winner River Lad ($17), one position ahead of the failed $4 favourite Audacious Spirit, after a solid effort coming from last on the turn.
Now they could be given the chance to atone back home at Rosehill in Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Civic Stakes (1400m) which Waller won 12 months ago with his Encosta De Lago mare Little Surfer Girl.
“Depending on how he comes through the Healy Stakes run, he could go around in the Civic,” Waller’s racing manager Liam Prior said.
A total of 14 horses were nominated for the Civic Stakes 2012 including two last start winners Jeff Brasch’s Snippetson four-year-old Ideal Position from Mudgee who won over 1400m at Rosehill on June 9, and the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained Elusive City three-year-old Famous Seamus who comes off a 1100m at the track on a Heavy (10).
Other notable hopefuls include Peter Snowden’s smart Lonhro mare Quidnunc, former Group winning Tassie mare Lady Lynette, and the John O’Shea-trained duo of June Stakes champ Alberton Park and Think Mink.
