Huge 2012 Sunshine Coast Guineas Nominations

A bumper 34 horses have been nominated for the Sunshine Coast Guineas 2012, the three-year-olds’ feature one of three Listed features running at the Sunshine Coast for Caloundra Cup Day this Saturday.

Won 12 months ago by Victorian raider Shenzhou Steeds who returns to the track for the $200,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m) on Saturday, the $100,000 Listed XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) is shaping up as another beauty this year with plenty of talent among the early entries.

One of the top form races heading into the Sunshine Coast Guineas this year is the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes run over the Eagle Farm mile back on June 9.

While the Peter Snowden-trained winner Mental, who beat them by an easy three lengths, won’t be there the runner-up Venture On and third placed Double Impact are both among the Guineas nominations.

Prior to the Daybreak Brian Smith’s Nothing To Lose gelding Venture On enjoyed a narrow win at the Sunshine Coast over 1400m after overcoming barrier 15 of 16.

The Jackie Crompton-trained Mossman gelding Double Impact meanwhile ran a brave fourth to subsequent Tattersall’s Tiara winner Pear Tart in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) in the wet at Eagle Farm before their effort in the Daybreak.

One of the best of the local hopes in this year’s Sunshine Coast Guineas is then Louise White’s Strategic gelding Diet who has won three of their past four starts.

Last time out Diet overcame the outside barrier 16 of 16 and was able to beat home a quality field in the T.L. Cooney Handicap (1350m) at Ipswich.

Other notable Sunshine Coast Guineas nominees include Michael Nolan’s last-start Toowoomba winner Agente, the John Sargent-trained Kiwi filly Cathay Lady coming off a win at Doomben over 1350m, the Gillian Heinrich-trained Main Street, and Chris Waller’s Savabeel filly from Sydney Savannah Dancer.

Kiwi import Savannah Dancer has had just three starts for Waller since arriving in Australia, most recently running fifth in a 1200m handicap at Canterbury on an unsuitable Heavy (9) track on June 13.

“The owners are keen to get some black type against her name so the timing of the race for her is ideal,” Waller’s racing manager Liam Prior said.

The Caloundra Cup Day race fields are due out on Wednesday with Races.com.au to publish all of the acceptances and barriers.
