Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A trip down under for the Melbourne Cup 2012 is being seriously considered for Willie Mullins’ genuine stayer Simenon after the gelding posted their third win on the trot at Royal Ascot over the weekend.
The Marju five-year-old was never threatened when running away to put an easy seven lengths on their closest rival in the £55,000 Queen Alexandra Stakes over 4369-metres on Diamond Jubilee Day.
It was their second big win at Ascot within the space of seven days the well performing hurdler, who recently enjoyed a 15 length romp in Ireland in a 3218m hurdle before their back-to-back Ascot victories, proving themselves as a flat race stayer to watch.
“He was very impressive and he seems a nice stayer,” Mullins said.
“He was dropped by the handicapper, so he is just going back up to where he was.
“I’d say with his age and maturity he’s just getting a bit stronger I think.”
Connections are now looking at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, and more specifically the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday November 6, for the gallant galloper.
Mullins also named the Group 2 Goodwood Cup (3219m) in the first week of August as the possible next-up assignment for Simenon, a win in which would assure them of passing the first qualifying clause for the Melbourne Cup.
“The Melbourne Cup is at the back of our minds,” Mullins said.
“I think we have a high enough rating now but we’d have to qualify by either winning a Listed race or being placed in a Group race I believe, although I’d have to check the conditions.
“I think we’re aiming towards the Goodwood Cup at this stage.
“The only thing wrong with that is that it’s on Galway Hurdle Day, but I think I might travel to Goodwood, as I’ve never been there.”
