Three gallopers are currently battling for top spot in the 2012 WJ Healy Stakes odds for the closing Tattersall’s Tiara Day race at Eagle Farm this weekend.
Bringing the action to a close as Eagle Farm Race 8 at 4:22pm on Saturday the $175,000 Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) field features 12 top sprinters.
Three of those are in a fighting for favouritism in the WJ Healy Stakes betting markets at bookmaker.com.au.
Currently the Chris Waller-trained Tromso and Rob Heathcote’s Excellantes are the $4.60 co-favourites, with Excellantes’ stablemate Griffon following closely on $4.80.
Drawn in the far outside barrier Lonhro five-year-old Tromso comes off a narrow first-up win over 1100m at Rosehill on May 26 and is set to improve stepping up in distance on Saturday.
Excellantes meanwhile is looking to return to winning form.
The Falvelon four-year-old won back-to-back Doomben features in May including the Listed Chief De Beers (1110m) before running fifth to the fellow Heathcote-trained Griffon in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
In the Lightning Excellantes jumped from barrier 11 (of 14) with Damien Oliver aboard.
They should get a nicer run from gate eight in the WJ Healy but with Oliver committed to ride $12 chance Adebisi, Hugh Bowman will take over riding duties on Excellantes.
Lightning Stakes winner Griffon meanwhile scored their first stakes victory as a $25 roughie but is at much shorter odds for the WJ Healy.
They will be ridden by Jim Byrne from barrier 10 on Saturday, Byrne having ridden the former Bart Cummings-trained galloper for their three starts last time in.
Following the top three there are two other hopefuls under double-figures in the WJ Healy Stakes odds with:
- #10 Audacious Spirit ($7) – Gillian Heinrich-trained Bel Esprit four-year-old won over 1200m at Doomben two back before finishing a game third in the Lightning Stakes, jumped from 10 there but gets the inside running from barrier one on Saturday
- #3 Tierqualo ($9) – Kelly Doughty’s Gold Coast galloper ran a first-up sixth in the Lightning off a 12 week break before which they enjoyed two good wins in the wet – if it rains back them, if not sack them
Other chances at juicer prices that have claims for an upset win include the Kelso Wood-trained Seek And Find ($11), Lightning Handicap fourth placegetter Adebisi ($12) and Norm Hilton’s six-year-old from Toowoomba Bold Glance ($17) who runs well fresh.
