Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Patinack Farm trainer John Thompson has warned punters not to discount Shamardashing from 2012 Tattersall’s Cup contention on the weekend saying the smart five-year-old had plenty of improvement in them from their last run.
The $200,000 Group 3 Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) is one of three Group race features on Eagle Farm’s Tattersall’s Tiara raceday program this Saturday, the field at capacity with 17 starters plus an emergency in Brian Smith’s last start Doomben winner Loves A Challenge.
One horse that will need to improve on their last start to win the Tattersall’s Cup is Shamardal gelding Shamardashing.
After back-to-back wins in the wet 42 days apart at Doomben and then the Gold Coast, Shamardashing ran a good fourth to Fantastic Blue when beaten less than a length in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) on May 26.
They failed to produce the same finish next start however when crossing nine and a half lengths away 12th to Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
They return to Eagle Farm this Saturday for another shot at Group race glory.
For their three most recent runs Shamardashing has been ridden by Chris Munce.
Munce however is engaged to ride one of the Tattersall’s Cup top fancies on Saturday aboard Gai Waterhouse’s beaten Ipswich Cup favourite Kinnersley.
Replacing Munce on Shamardashing is then Jeff Lloyd in barrier seven, Lloyd riding the galloper for the first time.
One thing working in Shamardashing and Lloyd’s favour on Saturday is their ideal barrier seven Tattersall’s Cup draw, the horse having jumped from gate 13 (of 16) and 15 (of 18) for their two most recent runs.
“He drew wide in both those runs and he’s drawn better on Saturday,” Thompson said.
“That should allow us to settle in a more prominent position which could spark some improvement.”
