On Friday local horseman John McNair, best known as the trainer of multiple Group 1 hero Hay List, will saddle up a double figure outsider in the Takeover Target Stakes 2012 at Gosford Racecoure with My Vegas looking to keep the stakes trophy at home.
Ten hopefuls have been accepted for this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) including veteran Royal Academy eight-year-old My Vegas.
Drawn in barrier six with Peter Robl to ride My Vegas is currently rated a $21 chance in the Takeover Target Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au.
Markets are led by John O’Shea’s June Stakes winning mare Alberton Park ($2.50) and the Peter Snowden-trained Skytrain ($4) who will be having their third attempt at the race.
In 2010 Skytrain started one of the favourites before falling during the run, returning 12 months ago to finish a credible fourth to the Joe Pride-trained Title.
Also lining up in the Takeover Target Stakes field for the third year in a row is My Vegas.
My Vegas ran a disappointing 10th to Title in the Takeover Target Stakes last year, while two years ago they were more competitive when finishing third to Border Rebel and Youthful Jack in the 2010 edition.
On Saturday they will face Youthful Jack again, Ross Stitt’s rejuvenated galloper looking to return to their winning form that saw them post three straight victories in Tasmania back in February.
An old-timer with 45 career starts to their name, My Vegas will be racing third-up for the season.
After a good first-up fourth to My Cookie Monster, a $41 roughie for Friday, when carrying 61kg at Gosford over 1000-metres on May 30, My Vegas was last seen running eighth to Alberton Park in the Listed June Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on June 9.
As mentioned Alberton Park is the favourite for the Takeover on Friday, and while McNair knows his horse has improvement in them, whether it is enough to turn the tables is yet to be determined.
“My Vegas had a terrific run last start,” McNair said.
“While I don’t feel he’s a true 1200-metre horse, Gosford is probably the best racing surface in the state at the moment.”
Whether you are backing the short-priced favourite Alberton Park or getting behind $21 outsider My Vegas for an upset, bookmaker.com.au has the Takeover Target Stakes odds you’re after.
