Alberton Park Tops Takeover Target Stakes Odds 2012

John O’Shea’s last-start June Stakes winner Alberton Park has opened the clear favourite to win the 2012 Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford this Friday.

Alberton Park has opened favourite to win the 2012 Takeover Target Stakes on Friday

Running as Gosford Race 7 at 3:50pm the $100,000 Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) field features just 10 sprinters, the short-priced favourite of which is Thorn Park mare Alberton Park.

Formerly prepared by Liam Birchley in Brisbane Alberton Park joined O’Shea’s Sydney stables at the start of the year and has won two of her six starts for her new trainer.

Fresh off an eleven week break she won the Listed June Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill last start on June 9 and O’Shea is hoping she can post back-to-back stakes wins on Saturday.

The bookies rate her a good chance to do just that with Alberton Park sitting top of the Takeover Target Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $2.50.

Three of her rivals are also at single-figure odds with:

  • #2 Skytrain ($4) – Peter Snowden’s Lonhro six-year-old comes off a June Stakes third, will be their third straight attempt at the Takeover Target having fallen in 2010 before running a good fourth last year
  • #1 Youthful Jack ($6) – Ross Stitt-trained gelding won three straight during February in Tasmania, travelled to Sydney in May and ran a first-up fifth which they are set to improve on
  • #5 See The World ($7) – Joe Pride’s chance of winning successive Takeover Targets, ran fourth in the June Stakes from barrier nine and will appreciate gate three on Friday

The top fancies are then followed by the likes of Robert Smerdon’s last start Flemington winner Beyond Pardon ($11) and Scone mare Sutton Queen ($17).
