Rohan Heads 2012 Belmont Guineas Field

While much of the winter racing hype in Australia focuses on the Brisbane Winter Carnival there is still some quality racing on the other side of the country including this weekend at Belmont which features the 2012 Belmont Guineas (1600m).

The Listed $100,000 event will test some of the best three-year-old horses in the west and one of the top chances is Vaughn Sigley-trained colt Rohan.

A winner of four of 10 starts, the Blackfriars colt has been in oustanding form of late, winning three of his last four starts.

After winning a three-year-old Handicap and the Listed JC Roberts Stakes, Rohan placed in the Melvista Stakes before recording an excellent 1 1/2 length victory in the Group 2 WATC Derby.

Bought for $61,000 at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale in 2010, the promising youngster has easily paid back his price tag by collecting more than $320,000 in prize money.

Another runner who would be familiar to those who have followed Perth racing in recent times is Flag Officer who will be racing for the first time since April 21.

The son of Excites won the TJ Smith Trophy in March and finished fourth in the WATC Derby.

He will be ridden by regular jockey Craig Staples from barrier 13 as he attempts to add to his promising record of four wins and six place finishes from 13 starts.

Stepping up to Listed level for the first time is Simon Miller-trained gelding Leoluck who has been a dominant force at lower level racing in Western Australia of late.

The talented three-year-old has won his last four starts including the Westspeed three-year-old Handicap two starts back when he stormed home to win by four lengths.

Other horses named in the Belmont Guineas field include Leoluck’s stablemate Roman Knows and Grant Williams-trained Elusive Image.

Markets will open later this week on all the Perth racing action and will have sensational odds.
