Mid Summer Music Tops 2012 Tattersall’s Tiara Field

Peter Moody’s upset Stradbroke Handicap winner Mid Summer Music will lead out a full Tattersall’s Tiara 2012 field at Eagle Farm this Saturday but the progressive mare has suffered an early blow with a horror barrier draw.

Mid Summer Music

Mid Summer Music has drawn wide with barrier 18 for the 2012 Tattersall's Tiara on Saturday

A total of 19 fillies and mares, 18 starters plus one emergency, were accepted for this year’s edition of the $500,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) which will bring Group 1 racing for the current Australian thoroughbred season to a close at 3:47pm on Saturday.

The top-rated of the hopefuls is Oamaru Force six-year-old Mid Summer Music who went out as a 30-1 shot to take out the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 9 when ridden by Luke Nolen.

Nolen won’t be there on Saturday to seek successive Group 1 wins with the mare however, the jockey in England preparing to partner Mid Summer Music’s superstar stablemate Black Caviar for her international debut in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Royal Ascot.

Replacing Nolen on Mid Summer Music this weekend is Ben Melham who has ridden her four times previously including for her third behind Black Caviar in last year’s Patinack Farm Classic, the duo looking to overcome a disastrously wide barrier 18 draw.

Four other last-start winners are engaged for the Tattersall’s Tiara 2012 including David Pfieffer’s General Nediym four-year-old Gai’s Choice.

Drawn ideally in barrier two with Jay Ford to ride Gai’s Choice will be after her fourth straight win this time in, the rejuvenated mare having broken her stakes duck last Saturday winning the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) at Ipswich.

Also seeking their fourth consecutive victory is the John Thompson-trained Pear Tart in barrier 14.

The smart Dehere filly has been in flying form this season relishing the wet weather in Brisbane.

Two back she put four lengths on her rivals to win a Class 3 over 1300m at Eagle Farm on a Heavy (8) when ridden by Chris Munce.

Last start she beat home the boys, including runner-up Free Wheeling, on another Heavy (8) Eagle Farm course to win the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) as a $16 outsider.

The other last start winners are then the Chris Waller-trained Red Tracer who held on in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 2, and Colin Little’s Dansili filly Soft Sand who has also drawn wide with barrier 16.

Due to be ridden by Damien Oliver Soft Sand comes off two smart trials firstly a blistering eight length win over 1200m at Deagon on June 14 and then another comfortable trial at Doomben on Tuesday morning.

“She trialled well,” Little said.

“She seemed very comfortable that way of going and she stretched out quite nicely in the last 200 metres.

“I’m happy with where she is.”

Other notable hopefuls include Guy Walter’s Emancipation Stakes winner Skyerush to get the rails run from barrier one, the Peter Snowden-trained Divorces, Dane Riper runner-up Forfeiture and Alltherightmoves who ran third in the Dane Ripper.
