Luckygray Heads 2012 Hyperion Stakes Field

Perth star Luckygray headlines an 11-horse field for Saturday’s Group 3 $125,000 2012 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) at Belmont.

The Bradbury’s Luck four-year-old has been touted as a potential Cox Plate starter after delivering an impressive early career record that stands at nine wins from 12 starts.

Trained by Gino Poletti, the gelding has already collected more than $1 million in prize money and will chase a third consecutive victory this weekend.

Luckygray won the Group 3 Roma Cup first-up by more than three lengths and produced a remarkable effort last start to win the Belmont Sprint by 1 1/2 lengths when carrying 61kg.

He is one of the most exciting horses to come from the west in recent times, having already taken Group 1 honours in November’s Railway Stakes.

Also named to contest the Perth feature race is six-year-old gelding Grand Nirvana who will need to turn around a last-start eighth in the Belmont Sprint.

The experienced Fred Kersley-trained horse has collected more than $1 million in prize money on his way to 10 career victories from 39 starts.

Coming off a solid run in the Belmont Sprint is Ross and Clint Price-trained gelding Colour Correct who finished 2 1/2 lengths behind Luckygray when fourth.

It was the first start for the veteran gelding since January last year and showed may still be some good results left in the seven-year-old.

Stablemate Reimbursement came the closest to upsetting Luckygray in the Belmont Sprint when second and heads into the race chasing his first win at Group level.

The son of State City boasts an impressive strike rate of 10 wins from 24 starts and has collected more than $350,000 in prize money.

The genuine veteran of the race is eight-year-old gelding Battle Emblem who has raced 56 times for 10 wins and is coming off a disappointing ninth in the Belmont Sprint.
