Quality racing heads north this weekend for the 2012 Rockhampton Cup which will feature a number of successful horses from across Queensland.
Thirty contenders have been nominated to contest the $100,000 event, with the number set to be reduced to 16 when final acceptances are made tomorrow.
One nominated horse who has been racing in the big time lately is Stradbroke Handicap starter Listen Son who has struggled this year to produce the form that saw him win at Listed level last November.
Trained by Tony Gollan, the five-year-old gelding has eight wins from 35 starts and has collected more than $400,000 in prize money.
Another horse who has featured in southern races is Tamworth-based Prussian Secret who finished fourth in a quality Scone Cup field to Peter Snowden-trained Raspberries.
The Cody Morgan-trained gelding has raced at many venues across the country and boasts a solid record of 12 wins from 36 starts.
Emvoss has started among the favourites in his two most recent starts at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival but he may finally be ready to convert after finishing third in a Class 6 race at Doomben on June 11.
One North Queensland horse who has been in excellent form is Townsville-based four-year-old Alotta Spur who has won four of her last five starts.
Trained by William Kenning, the Jet Spur mare has been in dominant form recently, including winning a Class 6 race by five lengths two starts back.
One of the top local hopes is Writer who has 13 wins from 35 starts and has not finished worse than fourth in his last five starts.
Also nominated for the Rockhampton Cup are John Thompson-trained gelding They Won’t Last and Mackay-based five-year-old Bawaardi.
