Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival may be coming to a close but Eagle Farm delivers a quality day of racing this weekend and one of the support races to the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara is the 2012 Centenary Classic Open Mile (1600m).
Seventeen horses have been nominated for the Listed $100,000 event including New Zealand-bred gelding Ginga Dude.
But the Graeme Boyd-trained eight-year-old may not line up after also being nominated for the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup.
Wherever Ginga Dude starts he will be chasing a first victory of the Winter Carnival after consecutive third-place efforts in Brisbane Group level races followed by a fifth-place finish in Saturday’s Ipswich Cup.
Also chasing his first win of the Winter Carnival is Chris Waller-trained gelding Firebolt who gets his best chance yet after finishing second to Solzhenitsyn in his past two starts.
The absence of Solzhenitsyn gives the six-year-old a great opportunity to add to his solid resume which currently stands at eight wins and 12 place finishes from 39 starts.
Jetset Lad nearly pulled off an upset on Saturday, with the New Zealand-bred four-year-old flying home in the Eye Liner Ipswich Stakes only to be narrowly beaten by favourite Belltone.
It was just the second start on Australian soil for the John Wheeler-trained gelding whose record stands at five wins from 24 starts.
Listen Son has not won since November last year but will appreciate a step down in class after producing back field finishes in the Group 3 BRC Sprint and the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.
Also nominated for the Centenary Classic Open Mile are BTC Cup fourth place-getter Varenna Miss and Spear Chief Handicap winner Pepperwood.
Betting will open later this week on all Saturday’s Eagle Farm action, so head to bookmaker.com.au to back a winter winner!
