Shenzhou Steeds Targets Caloundra Cup 2012

The weekend’s Ipswich Cup winner Shenzhou Steeds is set to back up at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday week with their trainer Michael Moroney naming the 2012 Caloundra Cup as the progressive galloper’s next-up winter target.

Ipswich Cup winner Shenzhou Steeds will next contest the 2012 Caloundra Cup

One of the final feature races of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival the $200,000 Caloundra City Cup (2400m) runs at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday June 30 and looks a nice goal for Ishiguru gelding Shenzhou Steeds after their smart victory in the $200,000 Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) last Saturday.

The former New Zealand-trained four-year-old continued their affinity with the tracks in Queensland, Shenzhou Steeds having won three straight in the sunshine state last winter including the Sunshine Coast Guineas, when they held on in a good finish to beat home $2.40 favourite Kinnersley in this year’s Ipswich Cup.

It was the sixth win from 14 starts, and their fourth from as many attempts in Queensland, for the lightly-raced winner who is proving themselves as a good staying type despite their breeding.

Moroney, who also won the 1997 Ipswich Cup with He’s Back On Track, will now continue onto the Caloundra Cup which will be the horse’s first test over 2400-metres in the hopes of securing another stakes win before the break.

“He certainly likes it up here,” Moroney said.

“I’m happy to try him a bit further now.

“He’s not really bred to stay but he looks like he should be running over ground and he has raced that way in shorter events.”

The Caloundra Cup is also on the cards for the Gai Waterhouse-trained Al Maher five-year-old Kinnersley who jockey Chris Munce said would be more suited to the track at the Sunshine Coast than Ipswich.

“He just wasn’t 100 percent comfortable on the tight track,” Munce said.

“But he was terribly brave and I think he would be a bit tougher opponent next time, particularly on a bigger track like the Sunshine Coast.”

Another galloper likely to be included in the Caloundra Cup nominations next week is 2010 champ Ironstein.
