Nolen’s Royal Ascot Entrée – King’s Stand Stakes 2012

Ace Aussie hoop Luke Nolen will prepare for his historical ride aboard superstar Black Caviar in Saturday’s Diamond Jubilee Stakes with a ride on the Royal Ascot Carnival’s opening meet tomorrow in the 2012 King’s Stand Stakes.

Nolen, aboard Peter Moody’s undefeated queen Black Caviar for 18 of her 21 career starts and wins to date, will get his first look at the famous undulating Royal Ascot course tomorrow as he rides the Jeremy Gask-trained Medicean Man in the £300,000 Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes (1000m).

“I’ve ridden at Ascot and it’s probably going to hold me in good stead because I won’t get completely overwhelmed by the situation,” Nolen, who travelled from Melbourne to the UK on Saturday night, said.

“I’ve got a couple of rides during the week so that will help me re-familiarise myself with the track.”

Aussie expat Gask, who also enjoyed a successful training career in South Australia before moving to UK four years back, engaged Nolen’s services on his Medicean six-year-old despite having never met the jockey.

“We made contact and I just think he’ll probably suit the horse,” Gask said.

“I don’t know Luke personally but I know he’s in great form and riding out of his skin.

“He’s ridden a Shergar Cup winner at Ascot (in 2010) so he’s familiar with the course.”

The horse comes off a good third over 1207m at Newmarket on June 9 and has three previous wins at Ascot to their name.

Medicean Man is rated a $51 roughie in the latest King’s Stand Stakes odds despite their nice barrier three draw, their last win being 12 months ago at the same track and distance as tomorrow’s race.

“The horse is good,” Gask said.

“I think he’s hitting form at the right time and he loves it there.

“He grows a leg at Ascot.”

Favourite for the King’s Stand Stakes is Australian-trained mare Ortensia from the Scone stables of Paul Messara, the classy daughter of Testa Rossa having won the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m) in Dubai last time out.
